The Art of Dying Clothing, aka the fear of flying solo

A kind fellow Etsyian Shoppe Owner emailed me today with some questions and nice comments to me about dying clothing. She noticed I upcycle some of my vintage with specialty dying techniques and was curious about doing this herself. Fear Not - it's not as difficult as one might imagine.

I'm sure there are lots of special instructions on what is the "proper" way to dye clothing, etc. but I can only tell you my way - and it was taught to me by someone who dyes clothing a lot.

First - I personally like to use liquid dyes - Rit is a known brand. You can even get adventurous and mix colors by utilizing mix instructions on their website. I wet the clothing in a rinse cycle in my washer if I have a large enough load (you can hand dye in the sink or a bucket for small things). Get everything nice and wet so the dye will be even. Then fill the load again with the hottest water the fabric can take, pour in the dye and agitate it in the wash cycle. Rinse it really well before you dry the fabric.

It is so FUN to see the magic that transpires when you upcycle something vintage into another version of itself!

Remember to hand wash dyed clothing in cool water or wash separately from your other clothing - dye can sometimes still transfer later.

Happy flying!!!!!
